Gas Lighting in The Park Estate

Although the City of Nottingham transitioned from gas to electric street lighting in 1937, The Park Estate chose to retain its iconic gas lamps. Today, 226 of these historic lamps remain in operation, each one considered to be of national historical and architectural significance.

Our gas street lights are operated by mechanical clocks, which automatically switch the gas supply on and off. These clocks require winding every two weeks, along with manual adjustments to account for seasonal changes in daylight. This maintenance takes the on-site team two full days to complete, during which they, wind and adjust all the clocks, carry out essential checks, relight pilot lights and replace any worn mantles.

(Mantles are the small mesh globes inside the lanterns that glow when lit by a flame)

We are proud to work closely with the British Gas Heritage Team, who are on site throughout the week handling more specialised tasks such as servicing, technical repairs and painting.

While our teams carry out regular inspections during the hours of darkness, we really appreciate residents letting us know if they spot any issues with the lamps. If you notice a gas lamp that isn’t working properly, please don’t hesitate to contact the Estate Office at enquiries@nottinghamparkestate.co.uk or call 0115 947 4273.

When reporting a fault, it’s extremely helpful to include the lamp number, which can be found on the base of the column. You can also click here to view the gas lamp plan.

Occasionally, lamps are struck by vehicles, which can cause significant damage and may result in a gas leak.
If you witness such an incident and suspect a gas leak, please call the Cadent Gas Emergency Line immediately on 0800 111 999.

Additionally, report the incident to the Estate Office with as much detail as possible. If you have information about the vehicle involved, such as the make, model, or registration number, it can help us recover repair costs through the driver’s insurance.
